Set in London, in the mid-late 1800s, TODD AND LOVETT follows the iconic character, Sweeney Todd, as he becomes one of the most feared killers in London, alongside his partner-in-crime, Mrs. Lovett and her infamous pie shop.

Based on the public domain character from Penny Dreadfuls, this Sweeney Todd is not based on the celebrated musical. This series is a new take on a famous villain. This Sweeney Todd is not completely a cold-blooded killer. Rather, he desires to be a member of society, but he cannot fight his dark, demonic urges. Much like DEXTER, Sweeney Todd tries to only kill those who “deserve it”. But, his taste for blood often wins out over his will power.

He meets Mrs. Lovett who, in this series, is an abused woman who finally kills her husband. Todd helps her and they team up to put her twisted plan of chopping him up for meat for her pies, into action. This proves to be a perfect match. Both Todd and Mrs. Lovett are disturbed, damaged people. When they run out of meat, they scheme to kill the “unsavory” of London’s dark underbelly. The pie shop starts getting massive crowds. No one suspects the dark secret behind the pies they adore.

Thematically, this series reflects the depravity that grows when people are desperately poor and forced to live under horrible conditions. Both Todd and Mrs. Lovett have horrible aspects of their pasts, which directly led to them becoming killers. This actually humanizes them, as neither is a complete sociopath. Like BREAKING BAD, Todd and Mrs. Lovett are doing what they have to, to get by. Sweeney Todd is not Hannibal Lecter. Despite the horrible deeds he does, this Sweeney Todd is a tragic hero.

This series follows the journey of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett as they interact with and corrupt those around them, as they try to make their way in a harsh, cruel world.
